The “CARMEN PROVENZANO LEADERSHIP” Award(s)
Our dear friend Carmen Provenzano cherished his memories of the Basilian Fathers and his five years as a student at St. Mary’s College. The SMC Alumni Association is pleased to offer these scholarships in his name.
Carmen was a part of many firsts at St. Mary’s. As a student, he was a member of the initial class at the College in 1956 and became our first Students’ Council President. He shared the quarterback position on our first Knight’s football squad with Harvey Barsanti and the late Roger Dezordo and played on the first Senior Knight’s basketball team.
After graduating from Law School, Carmen returned home to start his practice here and became the first President of the St. Mary’s College Alumni Association where he was instrumental in organizing two Cottage Lottery Fundraisers that provide capital for the bursaries that we are proud to offer in his name.
Carmen’s many accomplishments for the Sault Ste. Marie area and Canada are well known. He loved his community and its people and served selflessly to help them. In turn, the people have responded by naming a street “Carmen’s Way” in his honour.
We at St. Mary’s know of his love for his Alma Mater and the priests who helped form him. We return that love by offering this aid to our future generations in the name of one of St. Mary’s most beloved sons.

THE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED THROUGH THE ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ALUMNI FOUNDATION BY RUDY DUSCHEK, CLASS OF
1978.
Rudy Duschek CPA, CA, the benefactor of this scholarship, is an alumnus of St.
Mary’s College (class of 1978). Rudy believes that his accomplishments and
desire for continuous learning result directly from the values and attitudes instilled by his teachers at St. Mary’s and elsewhere. Rudy has been fortunate enough to have mentors that have challenged him and truly advocated the principles of Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge.
After graduating from St. Mary’s, Rudy completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Windsor in 1982. Since then, through a commitment to
life-long learning, Rudy has been fortunate to earn several professional designations.
The SMC Alumni Award will be awarded to a graduating student who has exhibited scholastic success and contributed to the school and community at large and who wishes to pursue a trade following graduation from SMC. The graduating student must have been accepted for a community college or apprenticeship program commencing in the next term following graduation from St. Mary’s College. Candidates must complete the Alumni award application form, including providing appropriate acceptance letters and transcripts, and must meet other criteria to be considered for this award.

The “Basilian” Award(s) in Honour of Basilian Fathers
When the Basilian Fathers first opened the doors to St. Mary's College in 1956, they brought with them a tradition that was already 200 years old. From their founding in France in 1757, the Congregation of the Priests of St. Basil has grown worldwide and today has schools and parishes in Canada, the United States, France, Mexico and Columbia. All of the schools that they have founded share a common motto with St. Mary's - "Teach me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge".
Fifty years after they began our traditions at SMC, the Basilians have left behind a legacy of commitment to our Gospel Values and Excellence in education. Like any growing, vibrant and organic entity, what began with Father Matt Mulcahy and Father Pat Lalonde in the last century continues to develop today at St. Mary's and will continue throughout the new millennium.
When they left St. Mary's, the Basilian Priests left behind their footprint of teaching young people about Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge. We remember the words of our iconic Priest, Teacher and Coach, Father Brian Higgins. "There is no better place to be than in a school, in a city on a river that are all named after the Blessed Virgin Mary."
And so it is only right that this award honour the commitment and sacrifice of all
of those wonderful men who heard God's call to come to our city to share the charism of the Congregation of the Priests of St. Basil.
Our generation has embraced this Gift of the Spirit given to us by them and we
will continue into the future generations to follow the path that they have shown
us.
We thank God for their vision and leadership.
The Basilian Fathers lived the lessons of Matthew’s Gospel (5:3). The criteria
for this award will emphasize a history of “Faith in Action and/or Good Deeds”, rather than strictly
academic achievement during the applicant’s secondary school year.
